What’s New About WordPress New Version Code Name Adderley ?

On March 31, 2020 WordPress released ver 5.4 “Adderley” .  The name is in honor of “Nat Adderley” . So what’s new you would ask me ? The new version boasts a whole lot of new features and bug fixes to  block editor.  When Gutenberg was first released in version 5.0 it faced a lot of criticism. Heck, even I didn’t like it.

The block editor was deemed to be slow and had no accessibilty support. It took a while for me to adjust to new block editor.  Many still don’t like Gutenberg and stick to classic editor or page builders for adding content to website. Fast forward ver 5.4 the block editor has come a long way. In the new version, block editor boasts a whole a lot of new features, enhancements and bug fixes to the editor.

List of New Features in WordPress Version 5.4

What makes the ver 5.4 more powerful is the introduction of new blocks viz.

• Social Icons Block has been added. This is an awesome feature.
• Buttons Block has been added

Other Features in Version 5.4

• Fullscreen editor has been made default in new version. There is option to disable it as well.
• Drag and Drop Feature to add featured Image has been added to the new version
• Mobile toolbar has been improved for block editor. This will make it easier to use editor using mobile.
• For social media enthusiasts, WordPress now supports embeding of TikTok Videos
• It also has Welcome Guide Block to help new users to understand the block editor better.
• Inline text color in text blocks along with Color Options for several blocks including Buttons, Columns,  Cover blocks etc.

If I had to choose 3 features I like the most, it would be

• Social icons block
• Buttons block
• Tiktok video embeding.

Page Builders like WPBakery, Elementor, Beaver Builder etc are become widely popular recently.  It would be interesting to see how the Gutenberg editor rises in popularity as the WordPress team starts adding new features and improvements to the block editor.
